Hamilton Gardens covers an area of 58 hectares at the southern end of Hamilton City, New Zealand. It is a public park owned and managed by the Hamilton City Council. Admission to all areas of Hamilton Gardens is free. Some minor garden development started in the early 1960's and the Rogers Rose Garden was made in 1971 but most development has occurred since 1982. Today Hamilton Gardens is the most popular visitor attraction in the region with about 600,000 visitors each year, nearly half of them being tourists. There are nearly 2000 events held within Hamilton Gardens each year. The unique theme of Hamilton Gardens is 'the story of gardens' which is explored through a series of five garden collections. The Paradise Garden Collection featuring gardens representing some of the most significant garden design traditions. The Productive Garden Collection representing different aspects of the relationship between people and plants. The Fantasy Garden Collection representing different forms of garden fantasy. The Cultivar Garden Collection featuring the story of plants selected and bred for the garden. The Landscape Garden Collection with areas representing the different historic interpretations of an idealised landscape. This web site is broken into the areas that correspond to the most common lines of enquiry. Visitor Information for first time visitors or people organising a group visit. Garden Collections for people wanting more background information on a particular garden. Venue Hire for those considering booking an area or a facility for their event. Hamilton Zoo
Hamilton Zoo
Hamilton Zoo started its life as Hilldale Game Farm in 1969 under the ownership of Mr and Mrs Powell. They mainly raised game birds for the Acclimatisation Society, although there was also a small collection of exotic mammals and birds for viewing. The 1960s and early 1970s saw a peak in the creation of new zoos throughout most western countries. In Britain three quarters of zoos date from this era. Hilldale was one of this generation's of small traditional zoos, which after a number of years found it difficult competing with an increasing variety of other recreational attractions. In 1976 Hamilton City Council stepped in to assist the zoo financially and bought the 14 hectare site, buildings and stock and appointed a Zoological Trust to run the enterprise. Closure for the zoo looked imminent, but in April 1984 Council resolved to continue its operation in response to a large public petition. The Department of Recreation and Welfare took over Hilldale's management. Later on it was recognised that a clear direction was needed for the zoo to continue. A concept plan was drawn up and as a result of this the Zoo Education Centre opened in 1987. The concept plan also saw the upgrading of zoo facilities with new exhibits, paved paths, boardwalks and intense planting. To provide better leadership, the position of Zoo Director was created in 1989. Over time there have been more changes and now there are over 25 people working at Hamilton Zoo. www.hamiltonzoo.co.nz
